Bernhard Schwartländer

Bernhard Schwartländer is Germany’s Global Health Envoy, a newly created position at the Federal Foreign office. He has had a distinguished career at the United Nations, most recently serving as Chef de Cabinet to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization in Geneva, during the COVID-19 pandemic among other health emergencies. A medical physician with a doctorate in epidemiology, Dr. Schwartländer has led the China country offices for both WHO and UNAIDS and held senior roles at the World Bank where he examined the global economic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria—an organization that invests more than $4 billion annually to defeat the three diseases. In Germany, he was head of the national HIV/AIDS program and led the Division of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the renowned Robert Koch Institute in Berlin. He is based in Beijing.
