James Chau Joins Ambassador Baucus in The Hindu’s Podcast to Discuss Xi-Trump Busan Summit

James Chau, President of the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF), joined Max Baucus, 11th U.S. Ambassador to China and former Chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, for a new episode of The Hindu’s In Focus podcast, hosted by G. Sampath. The discussion examined the recent agreement between President Xi and President Trump in South Korea and its implications for the future of U.S.-China relations.

In a wide-ranging conversation, they explored how the two countries are managing strategic competition while identifying areas of pragmatic cooperation. They also discussed the prospects for a more stable and predictable relationship, the significance of the “G2” framing, and the enduring importance of dialogue — not only between governments, but also between people.

“The relationship has matured to a stage where there is a more sober and realistic assessment of strategic competition,” said Mr. Chau. “If the new working groups and communication channels established in South Korea remain active and productive, they could provide the foundation for a more durable, more consistent relationship — one that benefits not only both countries, but the rest of the world that depends on their cooperation.”

Mr. Chau added: “More dialogue — whether through official or unofficial channels — is the way forward. People-to-people exchanges are essential, because they humanize the relationship and help both sides navigate differences with understanding and respect.”
