In June of 2023, the Baucus Institute took eight students from Montana State University and the University of Montana to China for 10 days. U.S. former Ambassador to China Max Baucus and his wife Mel also attended the trip. The delegation traveled to Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai from June 17 to June 27, engaging in people-to-people diplomacy, climate and environmental seminars, and cultural exchanges.

During their stay in Hong Kong from June 17 to 20, the students had a rich Hong Kong cultural tour, visiting the West Kowloon Cultural District, walking along the beautiful coastline of Victoria Harbor, and having delicious Hong Kong dim sum, etc.

On the evening of June 19, the students hopped aboard a 1920s-style tram and embarked on a fascinating sightseeing tour through genuine Hong Kong. Ambassador Baucus and the staff of China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) also joined the fascinating harbour tour.

The tram is an open-balcony design with sofas and equipped with light bulbs which make it glitter at night. The students encountered ultra-modern cityscapes and witnessed the vitality of the city while weaving through the bustling streets.

The 120-year old Hong Kong tramway, locally known as Ding Ding, has witnessed the ups and downs of Hong Kong in the past century. It is a living, evolving connection between Hong Kong’s colourful history and modern culture.

The students were deeply impressed by the tram tour and the city’s charm of “East meets West.”

The delegation also visited the Hong Kong Palace Museum and M+ Museum to learn about the city's art and culture.
